To whom concerned advices may be given?

  • Pregnant/Conceived women
  • Mothers for their children up to the age of 2 years or children up to the age of 5 years who are severely under weight (red marked class)
  • Mother-In-law, Husband and other members of the family
  • Gram pradhan and members of the Rural Health Nutrition and Hygiene Committee

On which issues advices may be given?

  • Nutrition of Pregnant/Conceived women
  • Only immediate breast feeding to the infants of 0-6 months
  • Complimentary nutrient diet to the children of 6 months to 2 years
  • Supplementation of micro nutrient diet
  • Observation of growth in the children
  • Hygiene and cleanliness
  • Breading health

Appropriate time when advice may be given?

  • At least 7 days in a month
  • Three days at Anganwari centers i.e. 5th, 15th and 25th day of every month when complimentary nutrient diet is distributed or the days scheduled by ICDS
  • Four days in a week, once in a week, whenever the pregnant women or infants along with the mother visit the anganwari center for taking (nutrient) meals/li>
  • On the occasion of the rural health nutrition day/li>

What issues are important to be remembered when anybody is being advised?

  • Welcoming is first issue
  • Ask the questions
  • Inform them about right speech/conduct
  • Help them
  • Repeating the message again at the time of 2nd meeting and encourage the conduct followed.

Advice and demonstration during common discussion

Let the beneficiary take his place in the circle of the people at the time of common discussion, the adviser before starting his speech/dialogue must ask few questions regarding the issues of advice, the adviser on the basis of this activity should convey his message regarding right conduct.

During home visits repeat the advices given at the time of common discussion and help every beneficiary in solving his problem regarding health and nutrition.

Pregnant and lactating women about nutrition, what should take care of things?

  • The table below at least four or more food groups included in the daily diet to say.

  • Take a added diet during pregnancy. Take the food in short intervals, (at least thrice a day) and take the food one and half(1 +1/2) times more than before, take the breakfast twice a day, so that the development of the baby breeding in the womb may be appropriate conceived must take diet 2 times more than before.
  • Eatables and its quantity must be advised has shown in the table and quantity should be demonstrated with the help of 250ml bowl.

Measure the increase in the weight during pregnancy

  • During pregnancy the weight increases for 9 to 11 kgs (monthly average increase in weight rises from 1.5kg to 2kg)
  • Get the weight measured every month on rural health and nutrition day

Use of iron tablets during pregnancy

  • After 3 month’s pregnancy, in remaining months take 180 iron tablets @ 01 tablet per day. Take 2 iron tablets in case of anemia (when hemoglobin is less than 11grms)
  • As for as possible take the iron tablet 1 hour after the meal or during night. The side-effects of iron tablets eg. Vomiting, acidity, giddiness and heaviness can be avoided by following this routine only.
  • Use of iron tablets during pregnancy helps the physical & mental growth of child. Deficiency of iron during pregnancy may cause the mother to be anemia tic, which may be dangerous to the mother as well as to the child, abundant bleeding to mother after delivery and under weight of the child after birth etc.
  • In case of severe anemia (hemoglobin less than 7 grms) refer the woman to the nearest health center where she may be given iron injection and may be cared by blood infusion.

Complimentary food being made available at anganwari center must be taken by pregnant and conceived women and not by the whole family.

Advices to be followed during pregnancy:

  • Take the sleep of 8 hrs daily in the night and 2 hrs in the day. Don’t lift any heavy item and don’t engage in hard labor.
  • The family members must help the pregnant women in her every day domestic work and they must assist her in check-ups at hospitals/center

What is appropriate time to start breast feeding and duration of the breast feeding?

dThe infants must be let free to feed their mother immediately after their birth. As a result of this natural activity mother starts-up lactating immediately.

What is appropriate time to start breast feeding and duration of the breast feeding of the mother?

For pregnant women, breastfeeding information

  • The infants must be let free to feed their mother immediately after their birth. As a result of this natural activity mother starts-up lactating immediately and lactating continuity goes on in mother physiology. Appropriate nutrition is also available to the infants.
  • The infants must be let free to feed their mother till 6 months (water restricted to be given). Water is available to the infants according to his/her necessity in the milk of mother.

Are the infants required to be given any other food in addition to mother’s milk?

  • Don’t provide water, ghutti/any natural medicine, sugar – water solution, milk of cow or buffalo. The infant must be let free to feed yellow thick milk (Khees) of mother as a result of which diseases resistance capability is built-up in the infants and infants are prevented from infection and contagious diseases & epidemics.
  • ORS, vaccine, vitamin and mineral syrup may be given to the infants as per the advice of doctor.

What are the advantages that are available to mothers and infants during breast feeding?

Advantages to infants during breast feeding:

  • Mother’s milk is a complete diet for the mental & physical of the infants.
  • Mother’s milk prevents the infants from many diseases.
  • The infants get the heat from the touch of mother’s body.
  • Close & affectionate ties are developed between the mother and infant.

Advantages to mother in breast feeding:

  • Breast feeding immediately after the birth helps the uterus to contract.
  • Placenta is expelled by itself after the delivery.
  • The danger of excess bleeding is minimized after the delivery.

What should be position/status of mother and infant during breast feeding?

  • Mother should be seated giving rest to her back, holding the infant by his waist, giving support to his lower body.
  • The face and the body of the infant should be towards mother.
  • While feeding on mother’s breast the lower lip of the infant should be towards below, his mouth should be wide open and his nose touch breast of the mother.
  • The brown portion of the mother’s breast should be inside the mouth of the infant and the gulping of the milk by the infant should be audible.
